At our regular meeting on Monday, 5 October 2026, we welcome former Rotary Club of Pattaya member John Takashi Yoshimoto as our guest speaker.
John is originally from the United States and has lived in Thailand for more than a decade. During his time in Thailand, he has been involved in a number of community projects, including playground renovations with the Hand to Hand Foundation and support for a bus project for Srisangwan Chiang Mai School for children with disabilities.
John will present a proposal aimed at modernizing the way certain numerical terms, large-number scales and date formats are taught and used in Thailand, with particular emphasis on their application in education, technology and international communication.
His presentation will explore the use of the internationally recognized Year-Month-Day date format, alternative ways of expressing numbers such as 10,000 and 100,000, and terminology for modern large-scale values used in technology, including billions, trillions, gigabytes and terabytes.
One practical example highlighted in the proposal is the terminology surrounding a 2-terabyte hard drive and the difficulties that can arise when traditional numerical terminology is applied to modern technical measurements.
John would like to present his ideas to the members of the Rotary Club of Pattaya, receive feedback and discuss whether elements of the proposal could potentially be developed into an educational pilot involving local schools. The proposal envisages starting with supplemental classroom material, evaluating the results and gathering feedback before considering any wider implementation.
